4sidez-deactivated20170826: Sup Ross, I have a question concerning one of your answers on Art Academy. I mostly agree that the difference between a professional and a beginner is that the professional continued working, but I have seen great artist fail because they weren't that great at self-promoting. So how would you go about self-promotion in an increasingly competitive online environment? Thanks!
This is a hard one to answer. Self promotion can be anywhere from organic and seamless to being irritating and obnoxious. Just establish a broad personal “brand” for yourself and let it be easily found in the public sphere (YouTube, Vimeo, Twitter, Newgrounds, Tumblr or wherever). The harder you work, the more your skill set will improve and the more your abilities will be a beacon of light amidst a million other voices. Which is really where my point of “not stopping” comes from, this takes years, probably close to a decade. Sometimes people will have their works aimed at a niche they’re heavily involved in themselves and regardless of what a lot of people think, that’s totally fine. Any audience or following you can establish doing something you care about is as valid as any other. That following is so valuable to your development and will likely follow you onward to other ventures. To keep yourself accountable, try and establish a group of like minded individuals online, stay close, collaborate and share your work with one another. For example, I’ve been friends with Arin from our Newgrounds days since we were 17. Same goes for a lot of my other art friends, while some have left my life, a lot remain and have found success. We all grew and developed our skills together! Something like that will really drive you to move forward and always better yourself. Sometimes having collaboration with your close friends can bring the eyes of people that previously weren’t following you. That’s also totally fine, if the eyes stay on you, you most likely have something of value that they’re looking for. In short, what I’m trying to say is let your work speak for itself, but also make it easily available for people to find it.
Teachers: Wikipedia is very unreliable *Hands out 25 year old textbooks instead*
Alrighty guys ,gals, and other genders and lack thereof I’m gonna teach ya a thing.
A lot of teachers will go on about not using wikipedia as a source.
“It’s bad,” they say. “I will deduct points if you do it.”
Well wikipedia is actually a great source of information and fuck what your teacher said, you absolutely can use it.
The key though is knowing
A.How to use it.
B. How to source it.
and
C. whether it is good info or trash.
NowFirst Lets look up something on wikipedia. Say your writing a paper on Gregor Mendel and Mendelian Inheritance.
So you zoom over to the Wikipedia page on Mendelian Inheritance.
Now there is a lot of information here. Not all of it is strictly necessary for that essay you are writing. So you read through and suddenly you see something that is good info for your essay.
Boy oh boy this information is useful. To bad your teacher said No Wikipedia Ever.
However there is a loophole.
It’s right there.
No. Go closer.
You see that little four? Its a citation number. Think of wikipedia as it’s own essay. It got it’s information from other sources out there. Just like you are trying to right now. And since there is a citation, it’s going to be listed at the end of the wikipedia article.
Look at citation number 4
Look at that you have your first citation. From Wikipedia.
And look. Do you see it. There is a link. It’s the blue words with the boxy arrow thingamajig.
That thing. Click it.
Why did you leave wikipedia you ask? Wikipedia is great. You have several sources from there. But There is more than what the put in to that wiki article. Those sources Wikipedia gave you are helpful. And now that you are at the source, you can utilize it.
But what if its a book that’s the source.
You can either head to your local library and see if they have it, order it, or avoid the book source. Online sources are just as valuable.
Also do not quote directly from the wikipedia. Quote from the source and then use quote citation.
And MLA citation. Use MLA citation. Since you are linked to the sources cite them. Not the wikipedia.
Your teacher will never know. And now you can finish that sweet essay you got planned.
You’re on your way to greatness.
^This. Valuable skills.^
One of the actual, real reasons to avoid wikipedia is that it’s something called a “tertiary source.” Primary sources are written by people who experience the event or situation firsthand, secondary sources are written by people who synthesize or elaborate on primary sources, and tertiary sources are indexes or compilations of secondary and primary sources, like dictionaries or encyclopedias. It’s not that they’re false or anything like that…it’s just that they’re the absolute entry-level information–they don’t really say anything new or original about anything, they just sort of present the information for easy perusal and quick reference. For almost any and every text worth writing, texts that writers write for a purpose or that enter into a true existing conversation about a topic, tertiary sources are at best a starting point–because if you’re only using tertiary sources, your own essay piece of writing is going to be shallow and uninspired af. At that point, practically speaking, you might as well just link your readers to the wikipedia article cuz you ain’t saying nothing new.
Tuesday Tips SUPER WEEK - More Acting Less Anatomy
I’ve received a few message asking me how to draw simple generic characters (male, female) for story boarding, and what to do when there’s no character design. I will go over all that stuff, but I need to emphasize something first. I used to be obsessed with muscles and specific anatomy when I was drawing anything. Thanks to 90s superhero comic books and raging hormones, it kept me from embracing the storytelling aspect of sketching. Even later on in art school, I would spend WAY took much time on getting that perfect line quality. Animation Storyboarding squashed most of those inclinations out of me, and that’s good. I need to confess that I almost caved in and “cleaned up” the drawings on this page. This is how I draw when do a “first pass” or just trying to find ideas. That way, I don’t lose the energy or feel of my first instinct when approaching a sequence. Here’s something you’ll hear many times if you hang around story people: “It’s not about pretty drawings.” I agree and disagree to a certain extent, but the sentiment is right. It’s about telling a story and not letting other things (like lines, musculature, clothing, etc.) get in the way of doing so clearly.
Once again, message me if you have requests for the next installments.
Have you ever thought “Man, I feel impossibly shitty and I don’t know why”?
Run through this checklist before you do anything else.
What have I eaten in the last 24 hours? Is it enough? If not, go and eat some food, you butt.
Am I hydrated? If not, put some fluids in your body, fool.
Have I slept an acceptable amount in the last 24 hours and preceeding few days? If not, do your utmost to have a nap. You need a reset, bro.
Have I been outside/partaken in whatever form of exercise I am capable of? You’re stagnating, homie.
Have I communicated with anyone? At all? About anything? In the last 24 hours? Sup, you’re not actually a lone wolf, and even if you’re just shouting BUTTLUMPS at someone over the intertubes, it’s better than shouting it at yourself inside your own head.
So basically: eat, drink, sleep, walk, and talk. If you still feel like emotional ass after that, start looking for more involved explanations.
This shit is no joke.
All of these are extremely important.
Adding: 6. Have I communicated too much? Am I overstimulated? Do I need some quiet time? Go stare at a blank wall in utter silence for a bit.
I try to go through this kind of checklist whenever I feel funky. It really helps.
This is glorious and even thought it doesn’t fit in the range of all the paranormal, I MUST share
It works like this: You tell Kitestring that you’re in a dangerous place or situation, and give it a time frame of when to check in on you. If you don’t reply back when it checks your status, it’ll alert your emergency contacts with a custom message you set up.
It doesn’t require you to touch anything (like bSafe) or shake your phone (like Nirbhaya) to send the distress signal. Kitestring is smarter, because it doesn’t need an action to alert people, it needs inaction.
This shouldn’t even be an app this should be an integrated feature into all phones on every OS
Ok, guys. Thi is really important. You have to reblogthat and read the whole article.
This will never happen to me. You can’t tell. Otherwise, if you don’t want to do for yourself, maybe among your follwers someone need this information.

paranoid browsing sifts through random webpages in the background (u dont have to look at or deal w any of these while its running btw) which masks whatever ur doing and makes it impossible for anyone to track ur internet history
ghostery notifies u every time u go on a site w any sort of stat counter or anything of the likes, it also gives u the options to block these sorts of things from tracking ur ip
this doesnt help w paranoia but its still useful, no more tumblr players automatically removes any music player on ppls blogs so u dont have to put up w annoying ppls autoplays. it doesnt affect other sites tho
