Anonymous: Hi I just want to ask about the whole child slave thing. I'm really confused why people are so angry at her about that.. since the child slave doesn't 'belong' to her but rather belong to her family. Isn't it out of her control then? Why do ppl make it look like she personally enslaves the child? I'm not trying to defend her I'm just genuinely confused. I know she's ableist but the thing about the child slavery is still confusing me

People are upset because of how she responded.

What sixpenceee could have said:

“Yes, my uncle has a child laborer. I think it’s morally reprehensible and indefensible. I’ve reported him to the police, have cut off all communication with that branch of the family, and am using my tumblr fame to set up a gofundme to benefit the child’s family so that they can afford to send the child to school rather than forcing her to work.”

What sixpenceee actually said:

“Yes, my uncle has a child laborer. Instead of distancing myself from it, I’m going to call her ‘our eight year old,’ which makes me sound as if I believe she partly belongs to me. But that’s totally okay you guys because it’s just a part of the culture. I’m going to ignore the numerous people from those cultures who’ve replied to me saying it’s not a thing. It’s also totally fine because she says she’s happy working for my family, but I’m going to say the only alternative is working in a dangerous factory - the idea that children shouldn’t have to work -at all- never crossed my mind. I’m also not going to acknowledge the power differential that would make her afraid of repercussions if she said she wasn’t happy.”

Also, that post is spreading like wildfire across tumblr because it’s unique. People get accused of ableism and/or plagiarism on tumblr every day of the week. It’s not uncommon, and that sometimes makes it boring.

Only one person I know of on tumblr has been associated with child slavery, even if that association is only through their family. And that person not only admitted their connection to it, but they defended the practice.

That’s why tumblr is having a field day with it.

Hey, I’d prefer you not to post this with my username (thanks)

On the topic of sixpenceee’s family having a slave – when I was a kid my grandfather and I went to visit distant relatives in a rich town in Uzbekistan where many had slaves. These distant family members had several slaves. It was pretty disgusting to see, because even though these family members treated their slaves “well”, you could tell they would much rather, obviously, not be slaves. I remember asking one of the kitchen workers if they enjoyed slavery, and she told me that she did, because it was better than alternatives. Exactly what Sixpenceee’s family’s slave apparently said. When we left, my grandfather (who is from Uzbekistan, and very against the slavery) told me that though it is considered better than some alternatives to the general populace, it’s still a miserable existence. No slave is really happy- you’re a slave, you don’t have any freedom and you literally belong to someone. You’re separated from your family, and even though you’re TECHNICALLY given the opportunity to leave, you aren’t really able to at all. I don’t know if Sixpenceee is lying to herself or what, but from the point of view of someone who met slaves who worked for his own family members, they are not ‘enthusastic’ or ‘happy’. If you’re asked, you have to say you enjoy it. Your wellbeing depends on your owners, and if you say that no, you hate being a slave, you’re paid less than minimum wage for working 24/7, you’ll be punished. It makes me angry for her to, basically, defend her family having a slave (ooh she’s a child, she’s happy, at least she isn’t dead lololol) and then turn around and talk about how the topic of slavery and trafficking is very near and dear to her heart or whatever. .44% of the population of Bangladesh is in slavery, 3.97% in Uzbekistan, where my family is from, but that doesn’t mean it’s normal there. At the very least, I don’t want her to be saying that “oh it’s normal here so it’s okay”.

Regarding any rumors or posts you may or may not have seen about me, everything was taken out of context and is extremely misinterpreted. Please signal boost this as this witch hunt mentality has bullied and hurt a lot of people before. It started in 2013 and has since then escalated into outlandish and wild accusations. I will never leave but this brutal attitude has got to stop.

How do you take “literally owning a child slave,” “trying to be a therapist when you’re not trained for it,” “ableist behavior,” and “stealing content from other creators” out of context? Please explain.

Anonymous: that sixpence person deleted the post and apologized, why make fun of them?

glumshoe:

Sixpenceee’s whole shtick has always been lazily lifting the work of others and using mental illness as a creepy punchline, and then constantly trying to milk it for profit, like the “Fuck Cancer” tshirts she’s selling that… don’t actually go towards cancer research or charity or anyone but herself. She’s also selling anti-suicide shirts that, again, profit only her.

Apologies or no, sixpenceee is consistently exploitative and self-promoting. She runs her blog like a business and makes thousands of dollars a month off uninspired tshirt designs using lazily compiled unoriginal content. A blogger making a well-meaning mistake is one thing. A blogger monetizing anything and everything again and again with little regard to ethics can handle some sarcastic jokes about their lack of propriety.
