I’m always weary when someone famous comes out as pansexual, because there are a lot of yikes definitions of it out there and I worry that they’re going to use one of those and that’s what all their fans and the media will think of pansexuality, and people will think all pansexuals agree with that definition and it will form a sort of bias against pan people.
take miley cyrus for example. she came out as pansexual and is very open about sexuality and gender. but she fucked up by saying she hates the word bisexual. personally, I think she meant she just never identified with or felt comfortable labeling herself as bi. but her wording was biphobic, and the comment about bisexuality putting her in a box because she doesn’t think about people being boys or girls is similar to the “trans inclusive” and “gender blind” definitions of pansexuality, which obviously are transphobic and problematic.
I wish she had thought more about what she was going to say, maybe chose better words or explained herself a little better. or even better, that she had just chosen to speak about pansexuality to give it the visibility it needs, instead of shitting on bisexuality, because it isn’t fair for bi people to be thrown under the bus and it isn’t fair for pan people to have one of the very few famous pans speaking so ignorantly.
