What’s actually the point of pansexuality if bisexuality already exists?
Like, okay, I’ll humor you and say that “sexuality is based on gender identity” and that “all these identities exist” and whatever, (now don’t get stuck here, there’s more), and pansexuals are attracted to any body, any identity and expression, but then at the same time bisexuality covers the exact same thing? When honestly, by it’s very name, should only cover two genders, but whatever I guess. I’m humoring you, so we’ll just go with what it is.
If someone is attracted to anyone regardless of their gender, but identify as bisexual, why don’t pansexuals just identify as bisexual? Why create a whole separate sexuality that is exactly like one that’s been established for much longer than some of these gender identities have existed.
So tell me, if a bisexual can be attracted to 2, 3, or all genders, then why have pansexuality, which is attraction to all genders, or regardless of gender, as an actual sexuality? What’s it’s purpose?
The main difference is that bi- can be the attraction to any number of genders and pan to all, as you said.
When someone identify as pan, they want to make it clear that they are attracted to every gender. There are other various reason to identify as one term over the other but i think this one is the most related to what you’re addressing here. As for poly-, I’m not poly myself nor talked a lot about polysexuality/romantism so I can’t provide a satisfying answer but it may be to dissociate themselves from the bi history? As a general answer, people identify as a label over another because it’s what resonate the most with them. It is also allowed for someone to id as some or all of those label.
Also, please keep in mind that we did not “invent” genders in the 21th century so in fact, bisexuality did not exist for “much longer than some of these gender identities”
