I actually just heard about this on the radio; the Michael Berry Show on WRNO 99.5. The hospital was trying to harvest his organs, and declared him dead. His father barricaded the door, and held an entire swat team at bay, until his son squeezed his hand, awake from a forced coma.

The swat team brought their own doctors who, after finally securing the room, started to check the kid. Turns out, the kid was fine, after waking up from the coma.

After the swat team doctors checked out the kid, there was a nurse who came in to “check” on the kid. The swat doctors asked to see her orders. Turns out she didn’t have any. What she did have was a 50cc syringe in her pocket, full of a powerful sedative. 5cc’s were enough to put someone in a deep coma. There were 50cc’s in the syringe, more than enough to euthanize the kid.

Swat doctors took her into custody. She refused to talk. They got a warrant and started checking into the deaths happening at the hospital. Turns out, there were a great many “quick decisions” made by hospital staff, for patients to be put into medically induced comas, from which they never woke up. All of which were finalized with organ transplants. Organ transplants which the families of the deceased did not know about.
TL:DR The hospital was euthanizing patients after illegally putting them into medical comas, then harvesting their organs.
Anything punctuating every paragraph with “it gets better…” is probably directly C/P’d from a FWD:FWD:FWD:FWD mass email from your aunt already crossposted to Facebook.
1.) “The kid” was a 27-year-old man who was in a coma because he had suffered a stroke.
2.) The hospital did not make the decision unilaterally. The patient’s mother and brother were in charge of making decisions for him. George Pickering II, the desperate father with a gun, was disarmed by his own son but managed to continue the standoff by claiming he had a back-up weapon.
3.) The procedures for diagnosing brain death are not uniform in the US:
Diagnosing someone as brain-dead when he or she is not would be a horrific error, Monti said. But measures that delay a correct diagnosis and reduce the availability of transplantable organs are also unacceptable, because they may deny a potential beneficiary a chance at life.
“This paper is a beautiful example of how good science and medicine and good practice go hand in hand,” Monti said. “The problem is that we really need to have an extremely uniform way of doing this because the devil really is in the details.”
4.) I can find zero sources claiming the Tomball Regional Medical Center was investigated -with a warrant or otherwise- for fraudulent medical comas and illegal organ harvesting.
TL;DR: The father had no rational basis to believe that his son had been misdiagnosed beyond being distraught, drunk, and feeling that the hospital was “moving too fast.” He went with his gut and got extremely lucky (and ten months with time served).
