you might be thinking of, like, capitalist overproduction, for example, which partly exists in terms of food production due to inneficiencies that are CAUSED by capitalism. If you ever talk to anyone who works in food service, or a grocery store, or any type of job involved with food basically, you’d KNOW how much food goes to waste!!!!! like, groceries have tons of food that expires that they throw out!!! it expires because poor people can’t afford to buy it! and the companies can afford to do this because A. the productivity of their farming and manufacturing is high enough and
B. they have depressed the wages of their workers LOW enough.
you can super easily look up how much food gets wasted in the process of distribution etc.
Plus, inefficiency in transportation causes more spoilage as well, since there are places where there are no local farms and all the food needs to be shipped to their grocery store. i think that a lot of people have talked about how socialism would involve a lot of establishment of farms local to communities to cut down on all the wasteful transportation. plus of course there are luxuries like idk chocolate and coffee and mangoes and stuff that only grows in certain climates and gets shipped all over the world because of its profitability as a commodity. mass production of luxury commodities would be ended or at the very least cut down on by like 90% ya know and instead all that productive capacity would be channeled into things that fulfill material needs such as FOOD.

have you EVER heard of rural/premodern subsistence farming/hunting/fishing communities? ever in your life? historically in so many of these communities food was/is shared as a common good (to various extents and with various social structures) and the community succeded or failed together. in small communities like that a lot of people are part of your extended family, and in a sense the whole community is a “family” in a sense.

“oh shiiit i made more food than i can eat… i guess i’ll just throw it in the garbage… my neighbor? i’ll just let them starve… oh, my kids? yeah they aren’t ME so they should get their own food i dont care if they die lol”
