“explicitly”. hmmph. Explicitly would be if the actual narrative framed his actions as shameful and abhorrent, and actual consequences were written to discourage his character from repeating them. Explicitly would be Kaminari not supporting him in his grand plans to see the girls in bikinis, explicitly would be the adult heroes taking more preventative actions towards an act of sexual harassment than asking a kid to look out for it, explicitly would be giving more punitive actions than absolutely no punishment whatsoever. Explicitly one of the girls asking for formal proceedings against being spied upon in the changing rooms, in the hot springs, explicitly Tsuyu wouldn’t stand in the water and have her chest groped without reporting it, explicitly shaming him we wouldn’t be made to see Mineta’s fantasies drawn out on screen to make us sympathise by showing his point of view as if it’s relatable, because intended or not, people who do think like him take it as relatable. Explicitly would be him recognising his actions and facing up to the fact that they’re wrong, confronted by his classmates with more than a throwaway remark that being creepy ‘isn’t cool’. Explicitly means grander consequences than being dunked underwater or poked in the eye or pushed off a fence without even any bruising in subsequent shots to act as a reminder that it happened and that he should face punishment, not waving it aside and never alluding to it again until the next time we’re forced to see him salivate. Explicitly would be Mineta rendered alone by his perversions until he’s forced to confront the reality that he brought social stigma and isolation upon himself, because his actions are wrong, his values are seriously skewed, and he doesn’t have the support of others to wave what he says and does aside because it’s comic relief, or it’s just Mineta, it’s just a joke, yeah it’s gross and he’s weird but what can you do~?
Be explicit, for one! The audience knows he deserves to be shunned, yet the characters don’t follow through! it’s frustrating and downright infuriating to have to sit through this, three seasons in, and watch this fucking bawbag have screen time when all he does time after time is go through the same scene: group of boys together -> distracted by Mineta -> “what are you doing” -> *fantasy backdrop of scantily clad teen girls* “*plan to harass or assault female classmates*” -> “hey that’s not cool” -> *show/other boys let him do it anyway* -> drat, Jerry the girls have foiled Tom the perv in some humorously violent way! better luck next time!
REPEAT.I’m fed up to the back teeth of it.
