the problem with being an old fan from back in the problem sleuth days trying to annotate homestuck for folks who are starting to read it now with none of the internet-denizen culture of the time or fandom hijinks context is that i don’t really have a good idea at all for the kind of things that are utterly obtuse to new readers.

i found myself asking today, for example, whether or not a new teen reader would know what ‘phat lewtz’ means. do they realize that p30pl3 actu4lli typ3d lyk3 di5? and that therefore giving your fantroll the quirk of replacing ‘k’ with ‘cc’ is directly intellectually derivative of the original source? this was somewhat lampshaded again later when hussie ripped dante basco’s characteristic syntax for rufioh nitram, i guess. if you go into it knowing who the trolls are does it still register that they are very literally Internet Trolls? i don’t want to patronize my (utterly hypothetical) audience but i just don’t know!

do i have followers who have never registered and participated in a single-purpose dedicated Internet Forum Website and have only ever experienced fandom in the panfandom content aggregation chamber that is tumblr or maybe reddit? was the gameFAQs environment foreign to yall?

Homestuck as a piece of media is going to need more and more annotation as the years go by, but lots of authors make their money by doing annotated versions of texts…maybe you could be a homestuck scholar in the same way ST Joshi is a Lovecraft scholar lol
