You know, I’m totally an apologist for Derrida and Deleuze and all those postructuralist cats who tried to make “play” a serious category of analysis, but goddamn if they hadn’t done that then maybe Judith Butler may not have based her writing on gender around gender as “performance,” a term that implies levity and the immaterial, and instead described it as “practice,” which I believe is much more appropriate. We “practice” gender, using the passed-down habits of our cultures within the material conditions we live in our everyday lives.

I thought about this because of the way femininity and womanhood are typically juxtaposed; femininity is understood as performance (ephemeral) versus identity (concrete). But identities are not concrete! As Rogers Brubaker has shown, identity is not a category of analysis, a fixed object of study, but is instead a category of practice, something that is “to do” rather than “to be.” Both womanhood and femininity are practices, not identities, that are reproduced in our daily lives and across generations, both as habits that are passed-down in families and communities and memes (in the original sense of a “an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by non-genetic means, especially imitation”) spread across society.
