symptoms of child abuse is sometimes not visible. children think it’s just the norm. they might recognise that they do not like it, or that it hurts, but they just accept it because they think that it’s just the way things are. they might not even recognise that they’re being abused, even until they grow up. sometimes the only way you know that they’re being abused is when they verbally tell you the way they’re being treated.

for example—i thought being hit as a punishment was the norm. i only learnt something was off with the way i was brought up when i casually mentioned to my friends that my parents hit me as a punishment. when i laughed as i said it, my friends shook their heads in concern.

sometimes child abuse does not leave visible marks or obvious symptoms. the next time a child talks to you, listen carefully.
