It is always important to acknowledge that epiphanies and lessons — be they personal or political, are fundamentally useless unless acted upon. This is especially true if your realization comes after mistakes that you have yet to criticize and work on.

Politically it is useless to realize your behaviors are homophobic if you fail to change those behaviors and work to alleviate the consequences of them among those you have hurt. It is not enough to stop exhibiting those behaviors either, political consciousness of injustice necessitates struggle against it.

By the same token, personally it is useless to recognize a way you have mistreated someone if you fail to combat this behavior and attempt to alleviate pain caused to the person in question — all realizations of essence require actions of substance lest they be simple vanity.

Since apparently it’s unclear I feel it necessary to add that behaviors requiring this criticism, amendment, and struggle include — transphobia, racism, harassing people on the internet, and fomenting reactionary propaganda.
