Yall i just got an email from tumblr saying I interacted with accounts made by the IRA …… is this even real????

The internet is wild

Im literally imagining some government worker in russia logging onto tumblr.edu and thinking to themselves “better change my url to ‘black-galaxy-magic’ to stay young n hip and relevant with the youth of america”

sooooo let’s break it down then because the fact that tumblr sent this email is mega important

if yall haven’t been living under a rock for the last year and a half, you may have heard that trump won the election. and you may have also heard that trump was helped out by russia in a ton of ways. one of those ways was by the russian troll farm, the internet research agency (IRA). there were 84 accounts on tumblr spreading anti-hillary propaganda and general discontent, mainly targeting POC and “socially aware” youth. some of those accounts were HUGELY influential, “4mysquad” being one of the top ones with tons of followers and popular posts.

a lot of them started with relatively innocent, pro-POC posts to gain a following, before moving on to anti-police, anti-hillary, and general anti-establishment to create distrust in the only major-party candidate against trump. like I said, many of the accounts were hugely influential so their posts spread FAR. all that visibility led to increased voter apathy, meaning less voter turnout and fewer people voting against trump. and tumblr was silent on this after the official indictment of the IRA, until literally just yesterday.

so to sum up, the email you and a ton of other people got is saying that you were following and sharing posts from russian pro-trump propaganda blogs. i’d ask that you PLEASE reblog this, because it’s super important that everyone who got this email knows why they got it, knows what it means, and hopefully knows what they might be able to do better in the future

This is important, but not for the reasons you are describing. It is important because this is a racist ploy being used by tumblr with thinly veiled Red Scare fear-mongering to support the fear culture growing in our nation.

I have many blogs. Each one of them with their own email I have hooked up to my phone. Some of these have zero likes and reblogs. And yet tumblr talks to me speaking of how these accounts were liking and reblogging and following these supposed blogs I know for a fact I have never interacted with.

It’s thinly-veiled racist fearmongering. Do not accept these things without a moment of hesitation just because it uses information that you seem to distrust. There is ZERO evidence of any of these things in ANY of the articles you link. It basically boils down to saying “If you hated Hillary (hello) and you’re part of BLM then it’s a Russian troll!!!” do you understand how dangerous this train of thought truly is? Tumblr has resorted to deleting all evidence and can be personally verified to outright LIE in their emails, to scare everyone into the impression that everyone was supporting the Russians.

Even if I’m wrong, there is something very disturbing to be said in tumblr’s actions. Mass-emailing everyone like this, even blogs with zero likes and reblogs, conveniently blaming the “scapegoats” to blame for Trump’s victory, all without any evidence and outright lying to some of us in our emails who know for a fact never interacted with these blogs.

Perhaps I’m wrong and more evidence will come to light: but please, if nothing else, be skeptical until we learn more. Tumblr has proven itself many times to not care for the safety of it’s users, letting Neo-Nazis run rampant even as they harass Jewish people and other minorities.

Be aware. Think, and if nothing else, do not claim things as facts just because it’s convenient to you.

And yet tumblr talks to me speaking of how these accounts were liking and reblogging and following these supposed blogs I know for a fact I have never interacted with.

now this is spicy

But yes when you think about it, tumblr doesn’t usually email everyone to let them know if an account they’ve been following was deleted for something heinous. Nor do they, in fact, delete most accounts that are transparently bots.

Also, not all of these blogs were spreading misinformation. The Buzzfeed article identifies one of them as having one post that was clearly misinformation, that got a lot of traction. But otherwise?

Have we ever thought about the fact that it shouldn’t be forbidden on the internet to run a blog full of political opinions, as long as those opinions aren’t direct lies? Even if your motives for doing so aren’t good? Even if you’re being paid to do so by a government?

You know, especially since those opinions weren’t fucking Nazism, which is still allowed on this site.

Like. Governments pay people to say things all the time. The CIA funded Jackson Pollock and didn’t disclose that. Not to mention that post that’s further back in my blog about how the CIA and US military didn’t disclose until the documents were legally demanded how many films they’d censored and altered to push their agenda.
