I wish I didn’t have to keep talking about TERFs but here’s a summary of what’s going on in the UK right now.

Two year ago the Trangender Equality Report is published, laying out all the ways trans people are discriminated against and what needs to change. The government just sits on it for over a year and does nothing, before Theresa May finally announces plans for changes to the Gender Recognition Act to make changing your legal gender easier. Right now trans people have to wait at least two years, have their life history examined by a panel of bureaucrats who know nothing about trans issues, and pay a substantial fee to change their legal gender.

No plans for urgently needed changes to trans healthcare or anything else, just this one very simple and long-overdue measure. Presumably the conservatives thought it was an easy way to do the bare minimum and get praise for it. Indeed, the opposition from the right was pretty muted, no serious challenges to the plans.

But then TERFs jump on it and not only oppose the plans but start a crusade against trans rights in general, trying to rollback protections under the equality act like bathroom access etc that trans people have already had for years. And they get a ton of transphobic articles published in the media, a huge campaign against trans rights.

Just the other day there was a segment on local radio about trans students using school bathrooms, a “““concerned parent”““ calls in like “oh i don’t have anything against trans people but my daughters are afraid of using bathrooms with them, here’s some statistics i just pulled straight out of my ass about why it’s harmful”.

Well, turns out she was actually a columnist for “Conservative Woman” and “Catholic Universe”, she’d written a ton of hateful transphobic screeds (as well anti-abortion, homophobia etc). This is the deceitful way that TERFs operate, presenting their public face as average impartial citizens instead of the hateful ideologues they really are.

It’s just as prominent on the left as well, the liberal and left media also publish their transphobic hot-takes, TERFs are trying to take over the labour party, the awful harassment of teenage labour party women’s officer Lily Madigan because she’s trans.

Anyway, nothing more has been announced by the government about changing the Gender Recognition Act, who knows what’s going to happen with that now. And it’s certain that as a result of the TERF campaign the government will be even more reluctant to take all the other necessary measures for trans equality than they already were.

It’s not just like “there’s a lot of bigots around but people calling themselves feminists should know better”, right now TERFs are literally the biggest threat to trans rights here. Sure, there are lots of bigots of various stripes who sympathies with them, but it’s TERFs doing all the legwork, they are the ones organizing, writing articles, harassing trans people.
