something that’s interesting about the whole “Anti-Semitism was a German import!” talking point you hear when it comes to non-German WW2 denialism is that in the French case (and this has definitely been a talking point used by Petain apologists) its a bit awkward because the far-right ultra-antisemitic French politician Xavier Vallat who held the position of “Commissioner-General for Jewish Questions“ under Vichy from 1940-1942 attempted to defend himself after the war by loudly proclaiming he was in fact a proud anti-Semite that hated Jews but that he was of the French anti-Semitic tradition stretching from Louis IX and Voltaire to Renan and Édouard Drumont as well as the general character of the Catholic Church in France. Vallat’s criminal charges werent directly about “anti-Semitism” but specifically of collaboration with Nazi Germany and thus Vallat sought to say his hatred of Jewish people was simply his proud French nationalism. There was even an incident where he got into a public shouting match with a young 27-year old SS officer where he said “I have been an anti-Semite longer than you have!” which may have actually been used as part of his defense that he was not ‘betraying France’ to German occupiers and held no culpability for the Holocaust because that was a product of German anti-Semitism, not its supposedly more civilized French counterpart

The defense didnt work but only partially. He was sentenced to ten years hard labor but released after two and granted amnesty in 1954 and went on to continue defending Vichy’s anti-Semitic laws and promote anti-Semitic conspiracy theories until he died.
