This international working womens day, lets not forget that that the struggle for women’s liberation is a struggle that can only be successful if articulated in materialist terms. Its goals can only be accomplished by looking at the material class status of women as a product domination at the hands of men. Resistance can only be articulated in terms of class war and struggle against men as a class, and can only be waged in the name of abolition of the very terms of man and woman. Monique Wittig Explains

“A materialist feminist approach to women’s oppression destroys the idea that women are a ‘natural group’… What the analysis accomplishes on the level of ideas… practice makes actual at the level of facts: by its very existence, lesbian society Destroys the artificial (social) fact constituting women as a natural group. A lesbian society pragmatically reveals that the division from men which women have been the object is a political one and shows that we have been ideologically rebuilt into a natural group.”

Lesbian feminism offers a means of resistance resistance by undermining the heterosexual social structure that facilitates domestic exploitation on the structural level and which naturalizes male domination by promoting ideologies of sexual difference. We must understand sexual difference as an ideology to be overcome; it is a theory which naturalizes and therefor upholds male supremacy.

Catherine MacKinnon succinctly argues that we cannot uphold the notion that sex provides a concrete and natural basis from which oppression emerges. In fact, she articulates the precise sense in which a reification of this sex through discourses of sex class fails to overcome male supremacy. She writes “Male dominant society has defined women as a discrete biological group forever. If this was going to produce liberation, we’d be free.”

Liberation will not be achieved through recognizing sex as the fundamental basis of oppression but by recognizing that sex relates to oppressions as the ideological category produced to naturalize a process of economic exploitation and socio-political domination.

Thea ideas of the past, the ideas used by patriarchy to justify exploitation and oppression are not sufficient. Something new is needed, not merely reformulating sexual difference into notions of sex caste. We need something new. As wittig puts it:

“There was a time when you were not a slave, remember that. You walked alone, full of laughter, you bathed bare-bellied. You say you have lost all recollection of it, remember … You say there are no words to describe this time, you say it does not exist. But remember. Make an effort to remember. Or, failing that, invent.”
