Being in a mothers Facebook group and reading the hundreds of posts there about the struggle of being a wife and mother is truly heartbreaking. These women are in relationships with useless men who refuse to help with the housework or even parent their children. These women are juggling jobs and mothering while barely receiving even acknowledgement let alone love from their husbands. Daily there are posts to the effect of “my husband told me I was a useless bitch yesterday when I asked him to start helping more around the house, is this normal?”

I think that it’s important as radical feminists that we engage with the women in our lives who are in abusive, patriarchal het relationships. Many women don’t realise what emotional abuse is, they just see it as “men being men” and think it’s acceptable. We need to start consciousness raising among these women and let them know that this male behaviour is not fucking acceptable.
