wow i love how leslie feinberg specified very clearly on her website that she wanted NO MOVIE VERSION of stone butch blues, explicitly because, among other reasons, she did not intend for the characters to have one canonical race, disability status, etc. and that everyone’s interpretations of them are valid but that “the derivative artist flattens and concretizes their own interpretation for all time, as if that’s the truth of Stone Butch Blues for all time and all readers. […] I do not give permission for Stone Butch Blues to be re-written based on someone else’s imagination.” …

… and yet i just saw a casting call for a new movie version that specifies for jess: “Ethnicity: Caucasian”

this is something I want to remind myself to look into more, because under intellectual property law this is illegal unless they A) received permission from feinberg or her estate or B) altered it far enough that it can be considered a derivative and not actually an adaptation of her work

this just seems sus to me

this is a focus features movie so they definitely got permission from the estate to do this but that’s a broader issue with IP rights being managed by someone who doesn’t have the same feelings about art as the creator. AFAIK feinbergs estate is managed by hir partner so i doubt this is an egregious money grab but that’s certainly always an issue esp for lgbt creators when their estates pass to estranged family. that said, boy am I dreading the slate thinkpieces on this one!

i’m just confused as to why pratt would ok this while also (seemingly) maintaining the site that displays feinberg’s extremely explicit final wishes for there to be no movie version. it’s fishy and i don’t like it

from someone on fb: I actually messaged the production company to ask why they were doing this, and the response that I got was that a “private investor” purchased the movie rights in 1993 through the original publisher, and that the current company acquired those rights in 2014. The head of the company (Jelayne Miles) says that Leslie was part of the 1993 deal. I have no way of verifying any of this information BUT I’m VERY troubled by this (and like I asked about Leslie’s *wishes* and the owner responded by talking about film rights… which is like a good context to have but uh not what I asked about.)

in short: yeah I take it back it’s shady!

wow! so, fair guess that this is the reanimated corpse of the movie feinberg describes backing out of at that same link? (rape tw):

No movie version:

I worked briefly on a movie version of Stone Butch Blues until I discovered that the producer’s prospectus was trying to raise capital from investors by offering a sexual fantasy: an invitation to watch butches being raped by police. I requested that no movie be made; I don’t believe any movie can be made true to the intention of the book.

ethical!
