My position has been that, during socialism and the abolition of race and gender (and thus the social problems of violence on transit), the car will slowly have to be abolished and replaced by the creation and expansion and retrofitting of multimodal, physically accessible (for unfortunately many current transit systmes simply aren’t) mass transit systems. When I argue for this, many counter by saying that “car ownership is an Important Cultural Value for Americans”.

Capitalism pulverizes all culture; why should, of all things, the car–a product of capitalism, a phallic symbol, an instrument in the atomization of society and the creation of the bourgeois family–be conceded to “culture”? Not language diversity (which must be sacrificed to utility), not anything else, but cars! The same argument holds for the suburb and its dwelling-unit: the single-family detached household with lawn.

“slowly” nah

Slowly because the transit infrastructure has to be built or retrofitted. Again, a lot of old, busy transit systems are not physically accessible.

Maybe our uses of “slow” and “fast” refer to different time scales
