So the decision to cast Will Smith as a black human cop with an Orc partner takes on a new subtext. In this universe, both Orcs and black humans are black. But Orcs as a concept often carry expectations of blackness as a corruption of humanity, a by-design sub-human and inferior being. The fact that Smith’s character Daryl Ward has racism against orcs is really… uncomfortable bearing that in mind. Like putting them next to one another is a constant signal of “a black man is respectable, but not a black black man.”
