I find that often folks reject the whole ‘all art is political’ concept because they are misinterpreting the statement as ‘all art is about politics, intentionally.’ The truth of the point is that all art exists within a political climate, within a culture, and within a medium at a specific time (politically) and thus is influenced by the political climate it exists within.

Even abstract art, by deviating from the traditions of an artistic medium is therefore rejecting it’s political environment to create a new one. Thus it is a rejection of the political, which is a political position. So yes, all art is political whether intentional or otherwise. The importance of being aware of this fact is to consider your own work and the work around you and ask what it is saying and how it fits into our grander political climate and how exactly we want to contribute or detract from that.
