another perspective

Most of the sex workers I know say they feel more respected than they did working retail. They’re not joking or being cute. Any day of the week they could go fill out an application at the Gap but they don’t want to go back to feeling like a worthless servant.

Most of these sex worker friends I speak of are independent workers, setting their own rules, choosing their own clients, and answering to nobody. They can do this in large part because the internet provided a way for them to do their work more safely. Sex work isn’t inherently dangerous, but our attitude that dead hookers are punchlines means that they’re often targeted as easy victims. The more we let sex workers control their own lives and make decisions for themselves without consequences (and arresting clients is a consequence that negatively affects sex workers so gtfo with the Swedish model bullshit) the safer sex workers are.

Sex trafficking isn’t sex work. It’s slavery. The problem with sex slavery isn’t the sex part, it’s the slavery. Slavery also occurs very commonly in restaurants, garment production, and food harvesting, but I don’t see anyone saying that we should abolish the clothing and food industries. You don’t make it illegal to sell food because some restaurant workers have been trafficked into the industry. You don’t demand that nobody can buy clothes until we make sure every single shirt gets checked out that it was made 100% ethically.

Sex work is work. It’s a job. Let people do what they want with their bodies.
