the best experience working in customer service that i ever had was when i worked at building 19 and they were going out of business. they got to a point where all sales were final and this rude asshole came in throwing a fit bc she couldn’t return some 25$ thing, and i was just in a state of total don’t-give-a-fuck and so was the store manager so i’m talking complete immunity to do and say whatever i wanted. so i told this lady i’d be more willing to help her if she’d drop the attitude and quit being so rude to me and she looked so -shocked-. then she started ranting about losing out on 25$ and i was like “i’m sorry you’re out 25 dollars but next week i’ll be out of a job, so i don’t actually care,” and the look on her face allowed me to ascend to a higher plane of existence. and that was my favorite day of work ever.

the dream.

I worked at Linens ‘n Things when it was going out of business and even when I wasn’t the manager on duty, I’d still get called to the till, probably because I was the most fun to watch.

This guy brought up a little stool that was defective (I think it was wobbly or something) and said “You are going to make me a deal on this.” At that point, everything in the store was 40%, so I nodded and straight faced said “Absolutely. You can have it for 40% off.”

“Well that’s what it’s on sale for already!”

“Oh! Oh, you’re right, I’m so sorry. Why don’t I give it to you for 60% of the original price?”

It took him a minute before he went “… that’s the same thing!”

“God, I’m so dumb. Hang on. I’ll talk to my manager and we’ll get this taken care of.” So I like.. full on movie dial some random number and pretend to have a conversation, explaining the situation, and occasionally going “Oh wow, Really?” and giving him a thumbs up before I hung up. “Okay. So I talked to my manager, and we can give it to you for 40% off.”

He got all huffy and told me he wasn’t going to take it. I thiiink my response was “Well, no skin off my ass.” because our liquidator and the management adored me, and we were all out of a job in a week anyway and who cared?

That job was the greatest therapy I’ve ever had in my life. It was downright cathartic.
