I don’t think I shared this story from camp before, but I just related it to my dad and remembered how funny it was.

One week this past summer, I had a cabin of really funny boys who all had kind hearts but serious meme problems. One boy was tall for his age and had hair so blond it was almost white - he liked to ask me every few hours if I thought they were all “real edgy preteens”. I laughed in his face.

Every day, this kid begged me to dab. I promised that I would do it once, but only once - and it would be the best dab he’d ever see. I wouldn’t tell him when it was coming, so he had to be prepared.

He continually reminded me of this promise. As the days ran out and the session came to a close, he started getting desperate. “You promised!” he said. “You swore you’d dab for us, Ship!”

Twenty minutes before I loaded them on the bus back home, I relented. “Fine, I’ll do what you asked. I’m going to dab.”

This kid - this poor, naive little boy - grinned with delight and pumped his fist in the air. He turned his head and shouted at the other boys: “Guys! He’s going to do it!”

While his head was turned, I jumped onto the picnic table… and dabbed. It was a smooth, clean motion, very snappy - not bad for my first try. All the boys cheered and clapped and howled with sadistic glee when they realized that the tow-haired boy, whose greatest desire that week had been to see me dab, had *missed it*.

“That’s not fair!” he screamed.

“I followed the very letter of your request,” I said. “I dabbed for you, just once. I didn’t tell you to look away. Sorry kid - ya lost this one!”

The other boys reassured him that it had been an excellent dab. “Dude, Ship dabbed like a pro. It was glorious to witness,” they said. “You should have seen it.”

As enjoyable as it was to be mean to a 12 year old, I kind of felt bad and was preparing to do it again when tow-head put his hand on my arm. “It’s okay,” he said. “It’s better this way. You won fair and square. I’ll be ready for it next summer, though.”

We exchanged quick hugs, and then my worthy opponent climbed onto the bus that would take him home. I stood by the road, waving with the other counselors, until I saw him waving back at me through a window. His normally-sarcastic face was contorted with emotion. I grinned at him, and dabbed.

His shriek of delight was inaudible from inside the bus.

I saw this kid again six months ago (a year after he was my camper) and he towered over me and spoke in a deep, booming voice - no longer an Edgy Preteen, but a bona fide Edgy Teen. “You’re still my favorite counselor,” he assured me. 

So I dabbed for him again.
