From a Conrad who just got home from the sandbox:

Its honestly time the left put the Spanish Civil War behind them. This has become a sort of fetishization. Every anarchist I know today says theyd fight in the SCW if given the chance, like saying so is a political purity merit badge.

Buddy, the YPG has all the good shit about the SCW and almost none of the bad. It was also illegal to join the SCW, it was harder to get there, you went for longer tours, and if you went you then came home to be blacklisted. If you came home. Oh, and the war was OPENLY being lost for the majority of the war.

Rojava vets from the US have shorter tours, lower mortality rates, are legally allowed to go. There are precisely ZERO ways in which fighting in the SCW would be easier than fighting in Rojava. And yet there have been less than 500 western volunteers EVER in the YPG, and at least half were former military non-politicals.

Since I went to Syria, I have been messaged 14 times total by people who want to go, the vast majority saying that it reminds them of the Spanish Civil War. And precisely zero have gone. For all, the reason has been “something came up”.

Im sorry that this is uncomfortable for yall. Im not saying any of this to call people out or shame people into going to Rojava. But at this point, I am tired of people saying theyd fight in the spanish civil war (Im equally tired f people saying theyd fight in the russian revolution, but because most of my buddies are ancoms, and basically everybody compares the syrian civil war with the spanish civil war, Im eroting about this). Im tired because “I would have done that” is a signifier for what you intellectually believe. It doesnt mean shit in regards to your activism.

If your activism doesnt match up to what you “would have done”, it doesnt mean anything. If your activism DOES match up, then it doesnt matter what you think about a century old conflict.

Do your activism. Drop the fetishization of century old conflicts.
