The most frustrating trend I have seen from American conservatives trying to co-opt Martin Luther King Jr. is their attempts to frame him entirely around Christianity and claim that he did everything by the power of Jesus, on the assumption that this would somehow upset the “secular,” “atheistic” left.

Martin Luther King Jr. was obviously and absolutely a devout Christian, probably one of the most dedicated Christians in recent memory. He did do everything by the power of God and with the influence of Christ. He is considered a saint by multiple international churches, including the Anglican Communion. But here’s the thing: King was also a radical socialist that regularly called for a new economic and political system. He didn’t do this in spite of his Christianity, but entirely because of it. King correctly got the economic justice message that Jesus preached that American conservatives pretty much entirely ignore.

So, it isn’t the left-wing that should be getting challenged by King’s Christianity. It is that most hypocritical and blindingly massive body known as the American Christian right-wing, who somehow can’t see that King’s dedication to Christianity is precisely why he became such a radical socialist in the first place. Maybe you should figure out why King was the way he was rather than trying to co-opt his message for your anti-Christian messages that you try to sell under the name of Jesus. King got Jesus right. Maybe you should try to do that too.
