IMPORTANT NEWS FOR ANYONE WITH CATS: ESSENTIAL OILS AND INCENSE CAN POISON THEM
I’ve been doing research on cat-safe EOs because I was going to start making my own bath bombs for fibromyalgia soaks, but holy shit there’s like no peer reviewed research on this and nobody can agree on what’s harmful and basically everything is going to poison your cat. Their little livers can’t handle metabolizing the molecule formation that happens when stuff is distilled into oil
It’s not just ingestion via the mouth either, because oils are generally chemically volatile, ie the molecules evaporate off into the air, and if they’re inhaled that causes issues too.
phenols are the main thing that cats can’t metabolize, which occur naturally in almost every type of oil. THEORETICALLY if you got phenol-free oils from plants that are cat safe that would be a better alternative but I haven’t been able to find any trustworthy source confirming this. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND A SOURCE COMPREHENSIVELY LISTING SAFE OILS TO USE AROUND CATS, AND MANY OF THE SOURCES YOU WILL FIND ON GOOGLE ARE CONTRADICTORY. One source I saw claimed that all citrus-based oils, like lemon, lime, grapefruit, etc, are pretty much universally poisonous to cats (which makes sense, because they hate citrus as a rule). Another claimed that citrus-based oils are molecularly metabolized like alcohol, and since cats can metabolize alcohol, ALL citrus-based oils are safe. Clearly these both can’t be factually correct. Better safe than sorry and assume it’s dangerous.
Signs of phenol poisoning in your cat includepanting, hyperactivity, restlessness, apprehension, drooling, vomiting, dark mucous membranes, green or black urine, ataxia, muscle tremors, shock, abnormal heart rhythm, and coma. If you notice any of these symptoms or you suspect your cat has ingested any oils or incense, take them to an emergency vet IMMEDIATELY.
Even if you don’t notice symptoms, that doesn’t mean your cat is safe. Just like it takes years of smoking to cause lung cancer, it can take years of inhaling evaporated oil particles before your cat shows any sign of poisoning, and by then it can be too late.
One way you can continue to use oils and incense is to use them in a room that your cat is not allowed to enter and open a window to aerate it thoroughly after the fact. If you use bath bombs with oils, use them in a bathroom that is not the same one that contains your cat’s litter box and make sure the bathtub is rinsed thoroughly afterward in case the cat comes into contact with it. Cats are weird, and a lot of them like to hang out in tubs for the same reason they like boxes, and many of them will lick up bathwater remains.
I just worry about it because people with cats also tend to be people that diffuse oils or burn incense and I don’t want any baby meows getting hurt from it.
