“The skin of the shark is unique in many ways. It is characterised by its grey colour and the contrast between its slippery appearance and its rough tactile texture.
Dermal denticles are present on the shark’s skin and give it the rough texture that has earned it its primary human function as sandpaper. These are small structures that resemble hard, grooved teeth but are actually placoid scales.”
I grew up free diving in the keys a lot so I really lovelovelove nerf (sorry ‘nurse’ but we literally always called them nerf sharks, they don’t got scary teeth) sharks they’re underappreciated and adorable
Sometimes my friend and me would have contests of who could sneak up on one and grab em, so I’m VERY familiar with how rough their skin is.
Well you see in my experience sharks are very smooth and when you try and grab them they slip right out of your hands
Little known fact: these toys were designed to train children on proper shark holding technique. During the Galeocerdo uprising of ‘69, an initiative passed to place these in every classroom in the US. Children who demonstrated exceptional skill were drafted into special squads deployed specifically to catch and contain baby sharks before they could grow to their full adult size. It is thanks to their efforts that today our streets and homes are not overrun by mountains of slippery smooth sharks.
