you should literally never tell anyone a trans person’s birth name

somehow cis people have a habit of telling me about their “trans friend” (probably a friend of a friend) by saying “oh you should meet my friend diana! she used to be doug!” wink wink nudge nudge

DISCLOSING A TRANS PERSON’S BIRTH NAME IS NEVER NECESSARY AND IS AN ACT OF VIOLENCE.

Hi i’ve gotten actual harassment in the form of people telling others my birth name. If you know a trans person’s birth name please keep it private

“But what if it’s unsafe!” Then a) don’t introduce them/bring them up. Or b) let them introduce themselves and follow their lead.

“But what if it’s to another trans person!” That’s even worse, you’re dead-naming someone to someone who knows the pain of having that happen. No, trans people don’t have a magical directory or hivemind of every trans person ever.

“But what if it’s–” NO. JUST NO. STOP.

Just don’t fucking dead name people, it’s dead for a reason.
