It’s part of our culture to build heroes up just to watch them fall (or perhaps even make them). Whether it’s a conscious media cycle or just the fact that deification is inherently a performance that one can only perform for so long before slipping up, heroes always fall.

It leaves us with a deep sense of negative nihilism where we are repeatedly asked to believe and then shown our belief is unfounded. No wonder so many people are so cynical.

The antidote? Kill your heroes. (No, not literally)

Stop holding people up as your ideal, they aren’t better than you. Certainly you can admire someone, even people you haven’t met, but idolizing someone mixes that admiration with envy. They become a class of human above and beyond you which you can only aspire to be.

Trash that idea. There’s no one else you have to be nor is anyone inherently better than you. Every human being has an individual unique experience of the world and only they will ever live and be exactly the person they are. Only you can be you and you can only be you.

We don’t need a new Gene Debs, Emma Goldman, Che Guevara, or Malcolm X. We need you.
