Rick and Morty isn’t a Nihilist show, it’s an Absurdist show

charlesoberonn:

Absurdism, in contrast to Nihilism, isn’t about the rejection of morals and meaning but rather about the divide between the human desire for meaning and the universe’s apathy towards it. This divide is known as The Absurd.

Rick and Morty deals with The Absurd a lot. From the Galactic Federation that cares little for human society to the Kromulons and Gas creatures that care for no living things, and the infinite multiverse that cares not for reality itself. The universe of Rick and Morty, or at least big parts of it, are apathetic towards the human condition.

When an individual faces The Absurd, there’re several reactions to it.

Nihilism
When an individual finds the universe doesn’t have any intrinsic meaning and that humanity doesn’t matter, it may drive that individual to reject all previously and currently held morals and live without care for anything.

In Rick and Morty this is best reflected in the Season 1 finale, with Rick having lost the will to care for anything anymore, he exclaims “My new catchphrase is I don’t give a fuck!”

Existentialism
Many, when faced with a lack of meaning in the universe, choose to imbue their lives with their own form of meaning. Be it religion, society, or in the case of Rick and Morty Season 2 finale, family.

Embracing The Absurd
The accepted and encouraged solution by absurdists to the dilemma is to embrace. Understand that the universe cares not for your desires to make sense of it, regardless of if you reject morals or accept them. And that’s okay. Keeping the knowledge in mind and continuing to live your life is the right way to go.

This is what happened in the finale (and all throughout) Rick and Morty Season 3, where the family decide to live with the fact they’ll never know for sure what’s real or not and be happy with that knowledge.
