You know what I’m beyond sick of? “The right to bear arms” being used as an argument against gun control.

“The right to bear arms” was created with specific context in mind. It was written at a time where people were going to have to take up arms against soldiers from Britain threatening to come and take control of their communities. It was established during a specific wartime that is no longer happening in the USA, during a very specific point in our history where it was necessary for the colonies to keep their independence.

But we ain’t a British colony anymore. We don’t need militia. We don’t need to keep guns in our homes to make sure our mother country won’t come and force us to behave the way they want.

The 2nd Amendment was written when we had single shot muskets, not fucking automatic rifles capable of mowing down 50 people in a matter of minutes. The 2nd Amendment was written at a time where shooting someone required you to be less than 300 yards from your target to hope to actually hit somebody.

It is not that time anymore.

I’m sick of people ignorant of historical context flippantly tossing out this useless excuse so that they can get out thinking about the ramifications of our lack of gun control. I’m sick of people sitting on their asses and shrugging their shoulders when people are walking into schools and shooting 8 year olds. I’m fucking tired of this country’s obsession with guns.

As I said on facebook:

It is quite frankly TREASONOUS to say or even suggest that THIS is what the founding fathers had in mind while writing the bill of rights. The second amendment deserves better. From all of us. The second amendment is about our right to have state militias outside of a federal military to protect against what happened with the British military refusing colonies to have their own militias. If that becomes a thing again, then yes.. Regulations for those militias will be necessary… But if you want to look me in the face and tell me that the founding fathers would want to protect someone’ right to gun this powerful (which mind you - at the time of writing this, weren’t even conceived of) with such little restriction and regulation…. You are accusing them of signing off on every mass murder and terrorist attack we have from average citizens and these guns.

You are saying that as a U.S. citizen, we are legally entitled to EXTREMELY powerful guns made EXPLICITLY to kill A LOT OF PEOPLE very quickly. These guns were not made for basic protection or hunting… They are guns made to kill a lot of people very quickly. There is no country on Earth in which citizens should be granted the inherent right to these guns for every day personal use. And saying this should be an exception……….. Well I just don’t know how to hate this country enough to suggest we have the inherent right to be that awful.

Obviously I nationalized this up for facebook appeal…. But the same tone applies. The second amendment was not written to protect this. And for someone to say that it was, they either have to be intentionally ignorant or willfully obtuse. They also have to honestly think that the country we live in was built on a principle of the inherent right of its citizens to own powerful guns made explicitly to kill a lot of people very quickly for ‘recreational’ purposes and like……… How could you even say you love your country at that?

Mind you - these are the same people who call not standing for the national anthem as a peaceful protest of racialized violence and oppression an act of treason against a “beautiful country.” Please.

Thank you for this response. Reading this made me think of a very important addition to your addition. Here’s a little more of my being really angry:

As an US Citizen I do not believe that we have the right to own weapons specifically made to KILL EACH OTHER. And there is no country on this godforsaken Earth where citizens should be granted THE INHERENT RIGHT TO KILL EACH OTHER.

Because that is what the USA is going right now. Giving its citizens the right to kill other US citizens.

Wow it’s almost like we should ban guns or get some serious gun control. It’s too bad gun lovers have their guns shoved...
