Yoooo so this is a really sensationalist article by resident shit-stirrer in the animation community Cartoon Brew. They were purposefully dragging Justin over the coals in this article…it was meant to make him look bad because that’s what Cartoon Brew does.

What REALLY HAPPENED was Justin was trying to get the R&M crew unionized and the union wasn’t complying. Giving them the run around, not returning their calls, generally being a pain in the ass to work with and Justin got really frustrated he couldn’t help out his crew as easily as he’d hoped. He probably shouldn’t have gone on a public rant about his frustrations with becoming unionized but yeah, just putting it out there. Cartoon Brew has a clear agenda and that’s to make anyone big in the industry look bad, because its a website run on jealousy and pettyness. The more you know~

Did you know it was one of such sensationalised articles that caused bronies to happen? Also that they leaked the name of the storyboarder at Cartoon Network who got sexually assaulted by the creator of Clarence before he got fired even though said storyboarder did not want their name revealed?

They posted a sensationist soapbox on how terrible the mere existence of a new MLP cartoon was for the entire animation industry and a few guys from /co/ started a thread intending to watch it for shits and giggles due to said article. It then turned out that they all liked it more than they thought they would and one of the posters jokingly and in a self-deprecating manner coined the term “bronies” for themselves. I actually saw the whole thing go down back in the day which still feels pretty crazy looking at it now.

October 19th 2010, a day that will live in infamy.  I was there, at Brony Ground Zero.

tatsumi-rin is roughly correct, Cartoon Brew is completely responsibly for sparking the fires of the brony fandom.

The article was called “The End of the Creator-Driven Era in TV Animation” and pointed to multiple shows the ‘signs’ of the end.  But the biggest finger point did go to My Little Pony, because of Lauren Faust & Rob Renzetti.  Both well known people in TV animation with a fair list of successful shows, now slaving to create a 22 minute toy commercial sponsored by Hasbro.  They called it the wave of the white flag in tv animation.

And of course like most pointless fucking media, they were wrong. Beyond My Little Pony which was ‘good’ but not mind blowing, there is a slew of other shows that have both come and gone that has beaten this article to death.

And now onto the womb of it all, 4chan’s Cartoon & Comics board.  MLP had been talked about on the board many times before, when it was first announced, when its premiere approached, and much like the tradition it is on the board, the several episodes that aired before this article had their discussion threads.  But these threads would lose steam and necro out of the board after a day, maybe two.

When this Cartoon Brew article dropped, it started a discussion on /co/.  Was the show that horrible, or was Cartoon Brew full of shit.  It became a challenge, or even a social experiment.

Watch this show and admit that it isn’t complete shit.

The snowball began to roll, and that discussion thread on /co/ took on a life of its own and became a permnant fixture on /co/’s front page, much to the dismay of so many others.  And thus the /co/ MLP General began.

The early days were quite innocent (honestly).  There is always porn and that bullshit, but people just watched the show, draw pictures, and shared short stories.

Brony was a joke name someone uttered once in awhile, was never taken seriously.

Love and Tolerate was a phrase used by the /co/ MLP General folks, but it wasn’t serious, it was actually code that translated to “Shut the fuck up”, as the threads always had trolls, and idiots who fed them.

Then towards the end of December 2010, some of the /co/ MLP General folks got bored one night and raided 4chan’s /b/ (random) board.  What they didn’t expect was for folks there to actually like it, spawning a new ‘branch’ of the fandom.

This new branch on /b/ are the ones who took up ‘brony’ as a name (/b/rony), removed their anonymous masks in favor of nicknames, and turned Love & Tolerate into a motto to live by.  They also drove the popularity of the fandom by really spreading the word around and turning everything into ponies.

You see, /co/ were fans of the show, we discussed, we drew, we wrote, and eventually made music.  /b/ were fans of the fandom, a rare few favoring the fandom over the show itself.

Then at the end of February 2011 some idiot moderator on 4chan got sick of seeing technicolor ponies everywhere and attempted to ban all the MLP fans, I think not realizing there was so many.  But this event caused the fandom to spread outwards into the general internet, much like bone cancer.

So yes, Cartoon Brew is totally and utterly to blame.

Fascinating stuff which certainly answers one of fandom’s greatest mysteries.

Grandma Amy remembers when Cartoon Brew was a respectable animation blog, one of the best. Then Jerry Beck(the good cop) left and Amid Amidi put on his crazy-pants animation elitist hat and it’s been stuck-up garbage ever since.
