blind-diode: Do you have an opinion on Dr. Bones or Egoism as a whole? I can't remember if I asked before but I would love to hear as much as you could tell if you have time. No obligation. And thank you

daggers-drawn:

I’m not familiar enough with Dr. Bones, but Egoism has very useful ideas and adds a new dimension of understanding to any anarchist’s worldview.

The most useful concept (though a little unfortunately named) is the idea of “spooks” as in “ghosts”. In the egoist sense these are ideas that people devote themselves to in such a way that they feel the idea is more important than their actual selves. In the egoist perspective ideas exist to serve people and not the other way around.

These “spooks” are said to “possess” people (a metaphor for how people become unquestioning vehicles for ideologies). Sometimes egoists will call appeals to ideas like this “spooky”.

So as an egoist as well as an anarcho-communist I am engaged in the struggle toward revolution for my own sake and the sakes of people who I happen to have an affinity for. I’m not doing it “because it’s the right thing to do” or “because it’s my duty” (both moralistic stances), but because I want to.

It’s a simple idea, but it’s very useful.
