Anonymous: i find it funny comparing defining borders to defining species because defining species is also actually bullshit with taxonomists arguing over differences and similarities that don't really matter. What is a species? No one know. Us biologists just like putting up these arbitrary lines for simplicity's sake. Which can have harmful consequences, but less so than borders do.

Yeah this is actually a result of a sort of idealism and essentialism that pervades scientific classifications, especially in something complex as biology and zoology.
