you can teach young ppl not to smoke without treating smokers (many of whom are lgbt, poc, and or otherwise marginalized and very much being taken advantage of by tobacco companies for this fact) as disgusting human beings who should be shamed and isolated

no offense but if you smoke, you’re fucking disgusting.

I started smoking because I was an anorexic abused kid with extreme anxiety who compulsively engaged in self destructive behaviors to gain some sense of control in my life. Instead of people seeing my behavior as evidence of some larger issues I was put down as just having a “gross habit” and “being rebellious.” Addiction in young people is a huge warning sign that they’re in trouble. Making young teens struggling with addiction the bad guy in every after school psa and calling them disgusting helps no one. There are better ways to teach young people not to smoke than demonizing their at risk peers. In fact offering counseling and support to help treat the causes of addiction as well as educating people on its health risks would be far better for everyone. Enough of this blind “smokers are bad people and disgusting” bullshit and more actually helping people and showing some fucking compassion.
