It is dark and cold and wet where Scrappy arranged for us to meet. I arrive unarmed, in both weaponry and words. I am here for one thing: to save the hostages. And I don’t have much time.

“I’m here, Scrappy.” I say, hearing the defeat in my own words. This is against everything I’ve fought for. I don’t make deals with this creature. But it is something I must do.

“So you know what you have to do.” He replies, emerging from the shadows. Despite the calmness in his voice, I can see that he is shaking. This situation is riddled with unpredictability.

I swallow my pride. “Yes. I’ll say what you want me to say, then you let them go. But I’ll say it only once.”

The greed in his eyes glows like fire.

I put my hands behind my back, defeated. “I… fear you.” I barely get the words out of my mouth. My soul sinks.

Scrappy smiles. “How delicious to know that you finally admit the truth. They are safe, that is all I needed from you.”

He is telling the truth, I can feel it in my heart that Garfield and Scooby are safe.

He begins to walk away. “Wait,” I call.

He turns back to me. “What?” he spits.

I slowly raise my arms back up, revealing the crossed fingers on my right hand.
