@ cis women: y'all know trans women are de facto forcibly sterilized, right? Like, if we don’t have the money and access required to freeze our genetic material (aka sperm), we can’t have biological offspring after starting hrt. And since almost everywhere requires medical transition as necessary to get legal recognition of our womanhood, this amounts to forced sterilization for the majority of trans women. So that’s what I mean when I say I resent being talked down to by “cis allies” on the subject of reproductive rights.

In many places throughout the world, permanent surgical sterilization via removal of the gonads is also a required step in order to get one’s gender legally changed. Cis gatekeepers really want to make sure trans people (and trans women especially) do not reproduce.

And what’s worse, we are supposed to be happy about it, and being unhappy with this arrangement can be taken as a sign that we aren’t a “real trans” and thus the medical care we need to transition will be withheld from us in many places. Its so fucked.

YES!! I literally was just talking to my friend yesterday about this. I’m permanently sterile and not by my own choice. 😡 And even if I somehow managed to remain virile, I have to coercively undergo extremely expensive surgery which will permanently render me unable to have children in order to be recognized by the state. I have no autonomy over my body. Remember the women’s march and how people actually got mad at trans women for criticizing how cis-centric it was?? When we spoke up about our issues being ignored and silenced, people literally said “It’s about reproductive rights, trans women don’t have any reproductive rights issues to demonstrate about!” 🙄

^^^ i also love your tags. Unlike what radfems claim, trans women most certainly experience sex-based oppression.

also, before someone else says it is – it isn’t the same sort of treatment for trans men. trans women are excluded in ways trans men are not

trans masculine folks aren’t sterilized by hrt. it’s recommended trans masculine folks on testosterone for a long time get a hysterectomy but it’s never a required procedure – the ‘sex change operation’ for trans masculine folks is always considered top surgery. that counts, legally. for trans women the only surgery that counts is bottom surgery (facial feminization surgery doesn’t).

trans masculine people benefit from the colloquial “fight for reproductive rights” by proxy – yeah, it’s erasure, because not all people with uteruses (uteri?) are women, but the outcome, the goal of keeping abortion safe and legal still helps trans men. auxiliary fights like making menstrual products exempt from luxury taxes also helps trans men.

trans women’s needs are completely kept out of the majority of “womens rights” movements, especially the reproductive justice movement.

this is transmisogyny in action.

It’s also just crystal fucking clear that the intent behind controlling reproductive rights is about controlling women, be they cis or trans.

Like it shouldn’t really need to be stated that these efforts are rooted in gender and not biology. And yet we go through the same cycle every time.

Most of us aren’t necessarily trying to make this about us; someone else made it about us and we’re trying to correct misinformation. It’s understandable why it may seem that way, though, if you just scroll through the notes.
