You kids who grew up with Adult Swim and shit already existing for most of your life have no idea how weird people thought the Simpsons were when they began. TV cartoons in prime time with “adult humor” were virtually unheard of at the time and people thought Simpsons was just bizarre as SHIT, like people thought it was “trippy” and “crazy” because they were like….yellow I guess, and that they were cartoons who said “damn” and “hell.”
And they were controversial, too. Teachers, parents, Christian groups and even president George Bush senior all bashed the Simpsons as a sign of decaying family values and accused it of teaching children delinquency.
To many of you this must sound like the cartoon equivalent of when your great great grandma got arrested for showing her ankle or something
Now of course the Simpsons is just this kind of saccharine, kind of dated background presence in everybody’s lives, recently surpassing 600 fucking episodes and most of them by now are the bad ones. The weirdest thing of all is honestly that this cartoon even had the monster impact that it did, that it was ever actually something edgy and fresh and daring to American culture. I was there and it still feels like a fever dream. If the show wasn’t still going on I’d chalk its ENTIRE existence up to a fever dream.
