When I was 18 and just left school I worked the restsurant and bar of a golf club for six months. It was my first proper job and a good one too, if only for the club members. These were middle aged to elderly men who spent all day in the clubhouse drinking beer from 10am to get away from their wives, and they LOVED harassing the female staff.

However, the one time I got so disgusted I wanted to punch one in the face involved another co-worker. She was just 15, she got the job because she’s the manager’s niece but she was a sweet girl and willing to learn. Problem was she didn’t know how to deal with the members. I recall vividly seeing her standing by a table in the restaurant with two men in their 70s, mercilessly teasing and flirting at her. She caught sight of me and gave me a look that screamed “HELP”. I called her back to the bar like I had a task for her to do but then one of those bastards grabbed her arm and stopped her. By the time I’d marched over there she was barely fighting back tears, I took her away and told them politely but firmly that they had to stop, that she was 15, that they were upsetting her.

And you know what they did? They LAUGHED.

Old men, I can’t imagine how sad and sick and entitled you must be that you think harassing a little girl until she cries is funny, but I hope the grave swallowed you up before you got another chance.

And let me just add for everyone’s benefit, you should NEVER touch your server, unless you’re their close friend or family. Whether they’re the same gender, opposite gender, younger, older, whatever. Even if you don’t mean anything by it, if you’re just trying to be nice, DON’T. It’s unprofessional, we are working, we don’t want physical contact with you.
