the fash is arming up, what are you doing?

So this article talks about needing a med kit but doesn’t go into detail about how to build one, so I will.  So the most important thing for a medic concerned about stabbings to have are bleeding trauma supplies. Your goal is to stabilize the patient until ems arrives, most likely by trying to stop bleeding.

here is what i pulled from my large trauma kit, i forgot to put shears in this photo but you’ll definitely want some. but if i wanted a light kit to carry with me to stabilize bleeding this is what i would take.

 this kit contains:

2 pairs of nitrile gloves

5 surgical pads

2 tegaderm bandages

3 sizes of celox hemostatic (15g pouch, 6g in an applicator, and 2g pouches)

1 compression bandage

5 non stick dressings in various sizes

1 pair of emt shears (not pictured)

1 roll of medical tape (also not in the picture)

and 2 rolls of gauze

this kit is light and easy to carry on your person so its always at hand, it is meant to stabilize bleeding, pretty much nothing else, it can be put together fairly cheaply, especially if a few people build them together and buy the supplies in bulk.

simple instructions for use on knife wounds would be to expose the wound, remove the surrounding clothing, apply the celox hemostatic, and cover with a non adherent dressing then a surgical pad and apply pressure.

@malpractician wanna add anything or this good?

I would also recommend at least 2 rolls of a bandage called Coban. It is a self adhesive bandage that can provide pressure and doesn’t require tape.

It’s super helpful when you need to work fast, don’t have extra hands or time to fuck with tape.

A bottle of sterile water or saline is always a good idea. Cleaning the wound with just a gentle pour can do wonders BUT DO NOT POUR IT DIRECTLY INTO THE WOUND!! Pour it at an angle so it will wash over the wound and not into it.

Do not use alcohol or iodine!! Alcohol will BURN LIKE HELL and some people are dangerously allergic to iodine and this could possibly make their condition worse.

Remember, stabilizing bleeding and airway are vital in this situation. Take precautions to protect yourself from blood born pathogens like HIV and the like. Gloves!! And make sure they are the right size for your hands (not too tight as they have a tendency to tear and not too loose as blood can get in through the wrist opening or it will make your hands pretty useless). And make sure nothing in your bag is latex!! This is also a severe allergy risk!!

AND!! AND THIS IS IMPORTANT!! DO NOT GIVE THE VICTIM ANY MEDICATIONS ESPECIALLY ASPIRIN!!! ASPIRIN IS A BLOOD THINNER AND WILL INCREASE BLEEDING AND MAKE IT HARDER TO STOP IT!! LET THE EMT, EMS, NURSES, AND DOCTORS HANDLE MEDICAL TREATMENT!!!

THE TRAUMA KIT IS STABILIZATION!!!

NOT MEDICAL TREATMENT!!!

i remembered this post, figured it might be an apt time to reblog

For tear gas, I would recommend getting a liquid antacid.

Source: been on the receiving end of tear gas once and a comrade saved me with this trick.
