A wild Hiveswap development team interview appears!

whatpumpkin:

I say “wild,” but does it count as such if it’s right on schedule…? Anyway, hello there folks - Ash here once again, bringing all of you lovely people another intriguing peep into the development of Hiveswap! Today we’re kicking things back to our art team as I interview Phil Gibson, one of the illustrious artists leaving his indelible stamp on Hiveswap in the form of some seriously gorgeous visuals. So without further ado, let’s get started… and as always, enjoy all the samples of Phil’s work sprinkled throughout the interview!

Introduce yourself to the fans! What is your specific role on the Hiveswap team?

Hi, fans! I do quite a variety of things on Hiveswap, most prominently animation cleanup, illustration work, and animation composition. Recently I’ve been doing a lot of character and prop designing as well!

When and how did you get your start on the Hiveswap project?

I started out by doing a bunch of writing and drawing for Paradox Space and, following that, was asked by Andrew [Hussie] to do some initial design work for the game.

Tell us a little bit about your career background! How did you get your start in art and graphic design? Do you have any advice for others looking to enter this field?

I’ve always been an artist and I’ve been drawing comics since forever. I wanted to do more, though, so I went to school to become a graphic designer. After graduating I worked for a local design studio making TV commercials, websites, and print media for eight years before joining What Pumpkin.

We’re making a video game, so of course the question must be asked: what’s your favorite game of all time, and what games are you playing currently (if any)?

I have so many “favorite” games that it’s really hard to narrow them down! Here’s some, though: Super Metroid, Super Mario Bros. 3Grandia II, Silent Hill, and Goemon’s Great Adventure… just to name a few. Currently, I’ve been playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild as often as I am able to get to it. I’ve also been really enjoying the remake of Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap as well.

Are there any games that you currently use or have used as inspiration for your own art and graphic design work here on Hiveswap, or just in general?

I was a huge fan of the LucasArts adventure games Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max Hit the Road, which are the types of games Hiveswap takes inspiration from. For my own personal stuff though, I’ve gotten a lot of inspiration from games like Dragon Quest, Kid Icarus, and various RPGs.

What are your preferred programs and applications as an artist and graphic designer? What are the tools of your trade?

For illustration, I use Clip Studio Paint. Photoshop is my go-to for anything that needs designing or animating (usually sprites), and AfterEffects is my program of choice for compositions and video. I use a 27” iMac with a 22” Monoprice video tablet for drawing.

What’s your workstation like? Do you like to listen to any particular kinds of music while you work? If so, tell us about it!

It’s just a desk with my monitors and hard drives, nothing fancy! I like to have a lot of room when I work. For music, I usually just listen to podcasts or ambient noise/drone music – it really helps me concentrate for some reason!

Favorite Homestuck character?

It’s a toss-up between John and Equius. John is such a likable doofus. But then again, Equius is such a sweaty weirdo.

Favorite Homestuck ship?

Definitely the golden Prospit ship used to cross the Yellow Yard.

Favorite Homestuck flash?

There’s so many, but I gotta give it to [S] Jade: Descend and [S] Rose: Ascend, since the animation is so frenetic and fast that it’s a great contrast to the generally “quiet” Pesterlogs. Plus it’s fun to see John and Nannasprite open up on those Ogres!

Do you have a personal message you’d like to relay to all the Homestuck and Hiveswap fans out there?

Thanks for being patient while we finish Act 1! We’re all working super hard to make sure you get your hands on a fantastic game!

Where can people find more of your work? Link us to your own little corner(s) of the Internet!

Currently I write and draw the comic FarFlung, which you can find at farflung-comic.com. You can also find me on Twitter @PiousKnob or on Tumblr at poinko.tumblr.com!

Finally, this seems like a good place to also mention all the writing and art I did for Paradox Space! I’m super proud of it, so by all means, check it out!

Thanks very much for taking the time out of your schedule to do this interview, Phil!

Well folks, that about wraps things up here this week, but you already know I’ll be back next Wednesday with a brand-new interview for you to pore over! In the meantime, we’re all working hard over here to bring you the definitive Hiveswap experience you deserve, and as always, we humbly and genuinely thank you for your continued patience. See you next week!
