anti-semitism in TAZ

carriedbystones:

i’ve been talking to my dad about the taz situation and what he had to say was that, as someone who grew up a jew in the aftermath of the holocaust and was raised by the one person in my family who survived it he’s seen this stereotype before, many times.

but what he said was that it’s a complex stereotype and involves many more features than just green skin/a hat (hooked nose, hunchback, usually horns, and often hairiness) and that by reducing what is genuinely a harmful stereotype to just one aspect of it is reductive and almost offensive.

this is a stereotype with a lot of nuance that is hard for goyim and young jews to understand. but a character having green skin or a pointy hat is not anti-semitic in and of itself. it’s part of a stereotype but just having an aspect of it doesn’t mean that it is one, anymore than a non jew being drawn with a nose like my jewish one is. as long as it doesn’t fulfill other aspects of the stereotype or openly attempt to be harmful it is not perpetuating one.

reducing a harmful stereotype to just one aspect of it and claiming that this makes something anti-semitic is bordering on offensive, especially to people who lived through this stereotype and saw firsthand the harm that it did in the aftermath of my family and many families deaths. before getting angry in situations like this, talk to your elders. read essays from our wise thinkers, not tumblr posts or twitter or anon messages. listen to all sides, especially those who disagree with you.

we are young people in a trying time but we cannot begin to comprehend what many of our families went through even just a generation ago. things like these are never simple and reducing what is such a complex issue to black and white does our culture and our heritage a disservice.

right now, the world feels out to get us. i feel that so deeply these days. but not everything is done to hurt us. sometimes things are accidents and misunderstandings (on both sides). please don’t let this world make you so hard that you don’t believe that there is still good out there, in whatever form that takes for you. our world is so imperfect and we were all made imperfect. no one is ever above criticism, including ourselves.

to goyim: you absolutely have no right to comment on any of this and those of you who have spread this idea should be ashamed of yourselves. you cannot begin to understand our complex culture and our long, long history. you do not get to decide what is and what isn’t anti-semitic. you have no say in this. we don’t need you to speak for us. we are not props for your discourse. listen to us when we talk, reblog the posts that you agree with, but this is not a place to throw your two cents in. what constitutes anti-semitic is an intracommunity discussion and it does not involve you.

to my fellow jews: i would love to hear what you have to say about this. feel free to comment on this post or send me a message.

to goyim: reblog this post if you want in any form but do not comment on it or send me a message looking for a debate.
