Clarification: This post isn’t about the quality of the cartoons in question, in case that wasn’t clear. It’s about their level of maturity.
It’s about whether a show is “adult” because it has jokes that wouldn’t be acceptable in a kids’ show. Or whether it’s actually for adults because it addresses adult themes, has mature writing that respects the adult audience and has characters that act like real adults.
south park has had some serious problems, but
(You’re Getting Old)
(Fun Times with Weapons, on how media is over-saturated with violence but obsessed with policing sexuality)
(Character Stuff)
also, I’m pretty sure I learned the entire concept of why media censorship is bad from south park
(Cartoon Wars)
finally, they really really really hate Family Guy (they made an episode about it),
(real episode, originally called Fuck Family Guy)
whatever you have to say about South Park it’s humor is at least character driven, Cartman is an asshole and literally drives most of the plots along with a lot of the other characters, something family guy does not have as an “adult” storytelling device
I dunno, South Park has a lot of immature jokes but deals with a lot of mature subjects and is probably on of the most deeply satirical shows on television, it’s been on the air since the 90s helping us (here in the US) deal with 9/11 and having some of the first positive gay characters (I’m serious) in the mainstream media of the time
Also, South Park is immature but that’s the joke, Matt and Trey wanted to make a show about how kids are not as innocent and ‘rose-colored’ as we culturally make them out to be, also they are just eccentric dudes
