the consensus on the right-wing internet seems to be that antifa is simultaneously a bunch of whiny college kids who can’t fight or get anything done and the greatest threat to free speech in the modern world

Fascists require an enemy that is pitifully weak when the fascist wants to stoke his ego, but unimaginably strong when he wants to play the victim.

They inevitably invent this enemy.

Eco called this a ‘continuous shifting of rhetorical focus’ and said it was one of the hallmarks of fascism.

I personally think everyone engages in rhetorical shifting to some extent, but with fascists it’s super obvious.
