The thing that unites communists, socialists, and anarchists is the analysis of class society. The varying schools usually agree on some key terms, such as that our society is divided on class lines and that this needs to be in some way resolved.
Thus leftism revolves around response to a unified problem, even while different leftists might have different responses and also consider there to be additional problems whether these are related to class struggle or not. Even democratic socialists like to speak of the owning class (in mystified terms and sparingly, of course).
Fascism, on the other hand, has no unified problem or shared concept. It is not bound up in the content of the participant’s worldviews. Whether they are driven by their hatred of the “Illuminati”, the “Globalists”, the “Matriarchy”, “Black Supremacists”, or even “the Anti-Christ” does not matter in the scheme of their overall movement or its unity.
Instead this is all an aesthetic shell around what amounts to an “ideological machine”. A mental device through which the fascist can distort the world so as to justify a mode of dominance they benefit from.
This is different from the general liberal tendency that seeks to make power imbalances invisible by claiming they don’t exist (e.g “All Lives Matter”) in that it seeks to invert the image of the real oppression so that the oppressed can be portrayed as oppressor and the bully as the victim (e.g. “White Lives Matter”). Nevertheless these do present a synergy with each other that leads to liberals magnifying the intensity of the fascist ideological campaign even without them meaning to.
Overall, leftist tendencies revolve around the establishment of shared meaning and the quest to reinvent our society among more equitable means. Fascism simply represents a series of excuses that can unite the people who don’t want to lose their advantages but also want to be the hero of the story.
Fascism will always require the destruction and inversion of meaning to continue because it cannot exist in a system where adherents are capable of questioning the terms of their participation and points of unity.
