you know when you feel like your parents are lowkey abusive but they don’t fit all the stuff abusive parents typically do so like… doubt???

Most abusers aren’t the child-hating persona that gets portrayed in the media. Most love their children and do want to be good parents. Something that happens a lot, especially among emotionally abusive parents, is they’ll tell themselves and others that they’re doing the best they can. They want to believe it because it’s easier than facing that they’re making mistakes that could be fixed if they put in the effort. The children often grow up believing it too.

It took me a along time to accept that I have abusers in my family because I believed abuse came from a place of hate or indifference and I knew these people loved their family. Someone can love their family and want the best for them and still fail to give them that because they’re not putting in the work to change their own behavior. I hope it gets better for you
