YES YOU SHOULD FEEL GUILTY

I just…have no words. I was gonna make a post about my experiences with yaoi, and I started working on it, but I have a French paper to write so maybe I’ll work on it later.

Bottom line: my experiences with yaoi are vastly different than this person’s. My experience as a yaoi fan was dark, scary, obsessive.

EDIT: She also uses “yaoi” to describe any mlm anime relationship, which is not the actual definition. Yaoi is a genre with its own tropes and cliches. A genre, a very problematic genre, but still a genre.

Okay, I’m gonna be honest here, I have no idea why y’all are so enraged that Aki calls herself a fujoshi and enjoys the yaoi genre and those kinds of relationships. Like, since when was that wrong??? I would think tumblr would be all over that kinda shit, but apparently not?? I don’t see why she should feel guilty over it if she genuinely enjoys it and isn’t harming anyone by doing so.

A question for the last person, too: how was your experience dark, scary, and obsessive? Do you mean just the fans and such were terrifying for you when you first got into that scene, or were you introduced to some crazy stuff? I found out about yaoi and those kinds of things early on and I can’t say that I ever found anything to be dark or scary.

I honestly don’t expect anyone to answer me or even really read this, but these are genuine questions and I’m honestly confused. If any of you who agree with this post would be kind enough to explain, I’m all ears.

hi there! I’m the op so I thought I might explain it.

there’s a few reasons why the word “fujoshi” means “dirty girl” in japanese.

I used to call myself a fujoshi and I’ve come to realise that yaoi and fujoshi are harming real people. yaoi is a really bad genre. it is honestly a horrible, horrible genre that harms real people.

yaoi often excuses rape or makes it seem romantic. you know junjou romantica? sekaiichi hatsukoi? big offenders with multiple rape/non-con scenes, but hugely popular in japan and all over the world. every single yaoi anime (and I know, because as a former fujoshi, I’ve seen them all) encourages rape or abuse in one way or another. every single one implies that rape victims aren’t being raped because they’re aroused or “actually want it”. that’s not even counting the manga- there’s countless. yaoi otome games like dramatical murder? rape/non-con scenes everywhere, from what I hear. super lovers even encourages legitimate pedophilia and ebephophilia. so yeah, gross content that makes people think that rape and abuse are ok, which in turn makes life hard for rape and abuse victims.

secondly, yaoi and fujoshi make life harder for men who like men (or for short, mlm) both in japan and abroad. gay men are not viewed favourably in japan. yaoi does nothing to help this. the seme/uke stereotype makes it seem like one man always has to play the feminine role in a romantic or sexual relationship. furthermore, it makes gay men look like predators who prey on unsuspecting straight boys. very few characters in yaoi actually self identify as gay and there is next to no discussion of the realities of life for men who like men in japan. not to mention that bisexuality is almost never a thing that is explicitly mentioned in yaoi manga/anime. so yeah, we basically don’t exist in the genre either. yaoi really promotes bad stereotypes that have been used to discriminate against mlm for years.

my mlm friends are all incredibly uncomfortable when girls ship them together or call them “yaoi couples”- and this actually happens way too often. look at the comments on aki’s videos- there are tons of girls there who do exactly this.

lastly, mlm relationships aren’t necessarily sexual and certainly aren’t just something for women to jerk off to. it’s like lesbian/bisexual porn that straight men watch. I like girls and I hate that shit. I’m not a fetish for anyone to get off to- I’m a real person, not a porn genre. I feel like an object. and that’s exactly how many mlm say they feel when they interact with fujoshi.

this is my boyfriend. they’re mlm and absolutely hate yaoi. and here are some other opinions of yaoi and fujoshi, from actual men who like men who I talked to about it:

and that’s all there is to say on the matter. I really hope aki realises that yaoi and fujoshi harm real people, because although she’s not a bad person, she’s certainly promoting bad things.

all of this, right there ^^^

Listen here guys:

Aki is a good person, and when I say good, I mean she’s amazing.

But please, don’t hate on her because she misuses words.

Like Jack and Mark said: educate, do not insult or hate.

If you’re hating on her because she misused some words, then go away.

Aki is one of the person I watch and I find amazing, because she is bursting with confidence, she’s open to talk about ANYTHING, and also, did I mention she’s an amzing cosplayer and she is really brave?

Because this:

was her

But also this:

Has happened to her.

Do not restrict her to the things she doesn’t know. Learn to know who she is, please.

I’m not “hating on her” though?? I don’t think she’s a bad person and I literally said that? I did nothing BUT educate. I didn’t say her videos are terrible, I didn’t say she doesn’t know anything (she speaks out a lot on feminist issues from what I’ve heard??). I have done nothing BUT educate, and my words are falling on deaf ears here.

this is NOT about aki as a person. aki’s behaviour in one video is simply my example.

here’s the real issue here: fujoshi behaviour is accepted way too much in the anime/manga community (I know, as a former fujoshi!!!).

this is not about a “misuse of a word”. “fujoshi” is a concept that should not fucking exist in the first place.“fujoshi” behaviour is NOT okay. even if aki didn’t call herself a fujoshi, her behaviour surrounding men who like men would still not be ok and I would still be making this post about fujoshi.
