Took me some time to formulate my thoughts together because I
was so emotional, but I feel this is a story I need to share with all my
friends and any POC/Ally that will be reading this. Warning: this will be a
long read about the racism I just encountered. All I ask is that you all please
read and share. Yesterday at around 11:00 PM my sister and I decided it would
be a great idea to show my cousins visiting from Denver a notable resturant in
the city (St. Paul, MN) called The Nook. We arrived, laughed, ate, and took pictures of the
noteworthy ceilings that had hundreds of dollar bills pinned to it. A couple
minutes before we got our check, a group of four white dudes walked in and sat
in the booth behind us. We thought nothing of this; however soon we did realize
the men had been listening to our conversation since they had been loudly
discussing many of the topics we had also been socializing about. Again we didn’t
think this was a big deal until one of the dudes poked his head out into our
booth. He then turned around and mumbled, “…shes the best looking
one”, this comment angered my sister and I calmed her down because I am
the least confrontational person. But only a couple minutes later the dudes
began to hurl pieces of crumbled up napkins into our booth, all of which hit
me. This obvious lack of respect angered my sister and I, and we began yelling,
which was well within our right. Y’all we were literally sitting minding our
own damn business. Another white male (who we are later informed is one of the
managers) witnessed only the part where my sister and I yelled at the
mayonnaise colored boys and then began to police my sister’s emotions shifting
the blame towards her. Even after I informed him of the situation, he acted
like we were the aggressors, and as though my sister was crazy when she clearly
has a right to be angry. When we told the manager he also needed to go talk to
the four white boys, he condescendingly joked about which group he should talk
to first and laughed. This white ass manager even had the nerve to ask me if it
might have been a dollar bill from the ceiling that fell on me instead. Y'all
if every white napkin I saw was a dollar bill, I’d be so rich right now. He
then lightly told the boys to knock it off or they’d have to leave (they should
have already been left, but whatever white people love other white people I
guess…). These white dudes even lied and said that we were the ones who threw
the napkins…lies? By the way, there was a camera right above our table. I
decided this manager handle the situation so badly that I needed to speak to
the head manager. This white lady heads over and informs me that the previous
male manager had told her of the situation. *SIDE NOTE* When you go to a sit
down restaurant, you expect good food and a great service experience right?
When I am at a sit down restaurant I’m paying for the whole experience. This is
not a far-fetched idea guys, simple restaurant etiquette. Not only was the
first manager condescending and policing necessary emotions, but also he didn’t
even kick the dudes out. Even when the second manager came, the four dudes were
still there and only left on their own cause they ended up feeling
uncomfortable. All of these situations add up to a terrible dining experience
that I surely will not pay for. *SIDE NOTE ENDED* When I told her this, she
said that because we ate the food, the experience shouldn’t matter. If the
experience of a customer doesn’t matter to you why even have a sit down
restaurant? Perhaps a food truck would better suit your needs? She also kept
flip-flopping claiming she didn’t know what happened all while naming specific
moments where she stated she was there. Y’all this lady made no sense, she lied
and said she went to their table and told them to leave, but we were literally
at the next booth and we could see that she never came to them. I have never
felt this voiceless and defeated in a while. The way the first manager made my
sisters emotions seem obsolete is something whites do to POC (especially women)
so often. I was really hurt and saddened. Whiteness is truly something else,
how they can go so hard for each other in a situation that is clearly wrong is
beyond me. After some lengthy back and forth she decided to give us the meal
for free and informed us that they are a business and money matters more than
basic customer service. Well if this is the case, then I urge all of you to
please share this post and do not put your money into this white ass business. On
a final note, one thing I can tell you guys for sure is that if this had
happened to a group of white girls, those four dudes would have gotten kicked
out ASAP. Thanks for reading, lets make sure these people don’t get a dime off
of us. PLEASE REBLOG AND LET PEOPLE KNOW
Hi guys, I don’t have that big of a social media platform and I really want to make sure everyone knows how terrible this business is. To make this viral I need all of your help continually reblogging this post until someone with a bigger platform picks it up. If you’ve read this far then please reblog.
If you live in the area, please spread the word. -Dami
