Sometimes I feel like folks forget that SU is a cartoon, and like all cartoons (and actually pretty much all fictional media), its primary purpose and goal is to entertain. Its to convey information and drive a story in a way that’s entertaining, and generally with cartoons its also important that its funny. Cartoons are also intended to be over the top and hyperbolic for the purpose of comedy (and sometimes drama). All fictional media does this but because of the cartoon medium, its meant to be especially over the top

A lot of people take issue with “Hit the Diamond” because “Ruby and Sapphire’s relationship and need to be together put them all in jeopardy!” but I feel like this completely ignores the fact that we’re watching a cartoon. We’re not supposed to take their actions as any more dangerous than when Pearl and Peridot put off working on the drill to have the Robolypmics. Ruby and Sapphire’s flirting was a way to create a conflict and further a plot point while also highlighting their relationship (which believe it or not needed more highlighting! A lot of people were still convinced they weren’t romantic and I’m sure a lot of people are still in denial even after “Hit the Diamond”). The point was that it was cute and funny, not a toxic danger. The stakes really weren’t that high

I just… I dunno, I just feel like people need to acknowledge that SU is, at the end of the day, a cartoon and that things are going to happen in it specifically because of the medium its in and specifically because its a fictional story. Its not that people can’t analyze actions and whatnot, but I do think its a benefit to be mindful of the fact that its a cartoon and to think of why and how the actions work in that context, not in the context of 100% dangerous reality where actions have mortal consequences

Like, how boring would “Hit the Diamond” have been without their flirting? And if they just won the game and the Rubies left for good?
