the PPG reboot owes its existence to the success (with kids) of Teen Titans GO!, but it’s kind of trying to be that and Steven Universe combined. Meme-filled, random humor, deviating wildly from the original? (failed) themes of gender, sexuality, feminism, and a narrative built around a thing of the week expanding our characters (before the overarching story of SU became apparent) ? It’s even clearly trying to side-step some of TTG’s most common complaints by trying to please the old fans (it doesn’t) but still draw in a new audience.
It doesn’t do any of this right. It doesn’t feel like it’s trying to be original in any way or add anything to the show we loved growing up. It just feels like it saw three shows that were successful and tried to slam them all together to create the ultimate Thing.
PPG Reboot is a testament to selling out, and the vague hope the nostalgia of adults will revive interest in a show that should be aimed at children
